Tuesday 30th October

The first thing we did today was play around with video editing such as i movie and windows movie maker. the first task we had to do on the video editing software was create own own video with picture or a video and then put some backing music to the video we created. it all turned out very well in the end. this was the first time i have used the software and i am very comfortable with using it. i very quickly got used to it and knew how to use it.

The second task for the video software was to create another video and put as many photos as we liked to the video showing all the stages of our room being put together (all the tables and computers set up). once we did that we added our own choice of music to the video to make it a bit more inspirational. the whole video would have to be like an advert and promoting Develop EBP. this video i made lasted around 1 minute 20seconds.

Once we finished with the video editing software we moved on to a riddle that john gave use about three light switches and try to figure it out over our fifteenth minute break. many of use managed to work it out and once explained it was pretty easy.

We had to write out written instruction step by step for a guy called Jeff(made up) because he couldn't get his computer to work after all the new components were installed.

Today went very well today and liked what we did. i enjoyed creating the videos and confident when doing it again.

Today Work

In to days work the first thing we had to do is go with John to the first floor where he had put tape on the floor which were in a shape of a box with the main components of a computer written inside them we went through how programs are processed through a computer. I learnt that a computer has a north bridge and a south bridge.

The second thing we did today was start on our level three email from a business whiting to know the requirements for setting up a new system and had to write a reply to them in great detail on what we would suggest.

Most people were in groups of two's but i was in a three and we had to compete against each other to find out about our component which was a sound card and then one with the most relevant and most information win the mini competition.

All in all today went very well and i got moved up to level three which is very good for me and I'm very happy how today went.

Peripherals & Graphics

Today we learned about all the peripherals that would be ideal for a graphics designer. the peripherals that we picked out are, mouse, stylus pad, scanner, high quality camera and webcam.
we found out that the most ideal and helpful peripherals are scanner, camera, mouse and stylus pad as you can do more with them. The stylus pad is ideal for drawing and using it as a substitute to a mouse (can be aimed at artists). The mouse is need by any one who uses a computer as it is the main thing you use to control the computer. A scanner is good for scanning pictures, books or text; With the right software you can edit the text that you have scanned. camera is essential for photographers and graphic designers for taking good quality picture that the graphics designer or photographer captures and then they can edit the photo by transferring it on to the computer and using software like Photoshop or Illustrator etc.

We got put in to two's (i was with billy) and we were given a peripheral to research and present as a poster, Power Point, Prezi or on any other presentation programs/software.

The peripheral that we got was stylus pads, we covered all the main points and done our presentation in word. once we completed the the presentation we went round to other peoples presentation with the same peripheral and then had a talk about who's was the most well presented.

in the afternoon we had functional skills maths and went over all the fractions. we got given our folders and a pack of sheets with tasks on to do when in our functional skills maths and for the tutor to see if we understand what we are supposed to be doing. we got there in the end and finished most of the work but i feel that fractions are not my strongest area in maths.

Taking a Laptop apart

Today we have learnt how to take a computer apart. the hardest thing to take apart is a laptop. when taking apart a laptop we must remember where all the screws go and to be more organised when taking it apart. We got there in the end taking the laptop apart and putting it back together.
When we took the laptop apart i could identify all the components inside it.
We took just about all the the components out which include the fan, processor, graphics card etc.

We all worked well in a group together and dispute the many drawbacks of putting the laptop back together we all contributed on completing the job.

I also edited and added more to my work on the email which i wrote about in yesterdays post and i added more to it. i have nearly completed my my presentation on potential risks when upgrading and installing news hardware.

Today was an experience as i haven't taken a computer apart before and have learnt many things when doing so. overall today went well and i am confident with the work we are doing in this unit.

22/10/12 Hardware Of A Computer

Today we did many thing about installing and upgrading hardware in a computer.
The first task we did was pretend that we had our own business and we had an email from a customer wanting to know whether it is worth upgrading their two year old computer.
The first thing we had to do is say about the main areas of upgrading a computer which are split in to three groups: speed, capacity and compatibility;
The amount of RAM would determine how fast multitasking would be and how smooth the user experiences is when using your computer. The higher the RAM the more programs you can run simultaneously without any hiccups with the system and all the programs that are running.
The hard drive would be the capacity and if the hard drive is near the full capacity it would considerably slow you computer down. when change the internal hard drive you will need to back up the existing hard drive on backup programs like cloud. then you will need to install the new hard drive which will have more capacity than the old one that you just replaced. if you want to get rid of your hard drive it would be ideal to smash it to pieces and then melt it but only done by professionals, the reason for doing this is because even when you wipe the hard drive you can still recover information, picture, videos etc. the information could be confidential and you want people to get hold.
Compatibility would be things like processor or graphics card. operating systems could be another. you need to make sure it is worth upgrading your old computer before installing the new hardware.

We had to put labor charges in and how much the hardware will roughly cost
one we wrote the email we had to send it off to our tutor so he can go through it and see if it is up to scratch and then he will send it back telling us what we will need to improve.

The second task we did today:
We had to create a presentation about the risks that may occur when changing/upgrading hardware in a computer. the main risks i went over were static shock, sharp metal, electrical current and liquids near the computer at the time of upgrading hardware.

Overall, today went very well and i enjoyed the lesson we had with our tutor. I think I am really benefiting from the course even though we are only three days in to the course. I am work very hard and try to complete all of the work on time.

What We Did 2day In Our New Building

Today we were creating our own computer that would fit in to the right system requirements for designing a game or logo and would need to be at a standard where it would be  powerful to run software like Adobe Photoshop, illustrator and fireworks. the computer would have to have a minimum of 512MB graphics card and 2GB ram  and will take 2GB of hard drive storage when installing.

We looked at a couple of websites to create our own computer that would be between £500 and £850. £500 being low range and £800 being high end computer. the websites were computer planet ( http://www.computerplanet.co.uk/custom/intel-sandy-bridge/step1.html&builder=1 ) and ( http://www.ebuyer.com/ ).

In the afternoon we had our first functional skills maths but it was just an introduction to the functional skills and went over stuff like what we will cover over the whole unit.

In my perspective the whole day went well and i enjoyed what i have accomplished such as creating an ideal computer for graphic and the system requirements my computer would need.

I Got A Mac and Our First Day In The New Building

The first thing we did this morning was go through all the safety in our new building. the layout of the building is very nice, we have a good lounge area where we can chill for our breaks and lunch. the computers on the ground floor are very nice i was one of the lucky one that got a brand new Mac instead of a normal windows desktop. i now know every thing about the health and safety of the building.

About 15 minutes before lunch we had a look at all the components in a computer and had to identify which one when where and what they did and what they were called.

Today we learned about the Comparison between components in a computer and the Human body. we had to sort out the peripherals and component in to to two groups. I need to set my time out better when doing work but overall i managed to nearly fully complete my work.

Day 3 Of Our Introduction

today we did a whole range of thing to get us working well in groups.
firstly: we were in groups of three and had a pack of cards, once we had the cards shuffled we had to get them in order: Ace, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,jack,queen and king, we did this many times to test whether it was quicker working in big groups or small groups. you would think it would be easier working in big groups but the result wasn't small groups either it was with about four people in a group that completed the challenge the quickest.
secondly: we were put in random groups of three and had to draw a computer, computer monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer and had to draw all the components inside and then match them with the human body such as the motherboard is like a human brain etc.
thirdly: we were in groups once again and were designing our own technology which would be in the far future and our group thought of a robot that would protect you from danger and do day to day things for you. all the groups had very good ideas but the chances of it being realistic is very far off.
